The New Mayor Vows a 'Dawn' for New York City in Inaugural Address
During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a new era” and an audacious start to his term.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
