The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
